This week we experienced winter weather that was just too chilly to comfortably be outdoors. Although we enjoyed reading by the fire, by midweek the school books were looked upon with dread, and everyone was talking of their longing for summer weather and activities.
As I’m not a fan of winter temperatures, it was hard not to dream along with the kids. Even the fun of a game day did not fully dismiss the desire to be in a comfortable outdoor season.
One morning, as I opened the curtains over my kitchen window, I found myself staring at the most amazing sight. A spider web that was just under the eve hung heavy with frost. Each and every silk strand was beautifully outlined. I was struck with the detailed beauty in God’s creation. I could not have seen such beauty without the chill that comes with winter.
Bundled in winter attire, we strayed out of the warmth of the house for a walk about our wintery yard. Although the incredible spider web was not in a location to capture on film, we took many other pictures. Columbo especially enjoyed the opportunity to have a photo lesson with his new camera. Our pictures did not do justice to the winter beauty.
We will be transferring some of our pictures, and memories of the beauty we saw, to our nature journals. Despite the longing for warmer outings, we will continue to seek out God’s beauty in winter.
