With a dreaded chill in the wind, it’s clear that fall is upon us. Yes, my beloved shorts and tees are packed away and out have come the jeans and sweatshirts.
Although we’ve had some sporadic rain, we have welcomed some crisp bright days to take our lessons outside to observe the seasonal changes around us. During a recent outing I equipped each of the littles with fall nature worksheets from Handbook of Nature Study and Hearts and Trees.
We initially leashed up Rosie the dog and began with a walk around our neighborhood. Unfortunately the day had begun with bickering, and our outing didn’t improve relations….Rosie did not help! I’m sure none of you have ever had such an experience.
Once home, I sent the littles to the backyard to expel some energy. With clipboards in hand, they took their studies of fall to the backyard. I was so surprised, and excited by their change in attitude, I joined them with my own list of a fall digital camera scavenger hunt, also from Hearts and Trees. Before I knew it, we had found a number of items on the list, and accomplished with cheerful hearts.
We did have to help some leaves “fall.”
We had a great time with seasonal change lessons, and heart lessons. I think that is what education is really all about!!
