After enjoying the holiday break, we are back to school. Despite some grumbles I find my kids thrive on routine.
In hope of discouraging those back to school grumbles I was excited to find something fun and new. We started with some winter activity sheets that I found online. The pack contained a little something for everyone, and the fun snowmen put the littles in much better moods.
As Columbo and Magoo had an exciting time classifying toy animals during science, Little Bear announced a desire to also learn something about animals. She gave me a rather extensive list of creatures that she’d like to learn about, so I made her some animal beginning sound cards. (I printed on standard paper and laminated, or they can be printed on card stock. I gave her clothes pins to “mark” her letter.) She was quite pleased with her new lesson.
Jumping back into concentrated reading felt like a struggle for Magoo. From focusing on the page, tracking, and then decoding each word, he can get flustered easily. Last year I made him word family books as one tool to support his early reading. Although he still likes to read through them he is more engaged when there’s something different and hands on. I was glad to find some cookie sheet activities to try out. So far he’s enjoying something new.
The back to school adventure didn’t end in the classroom. We took P.E. outside today so we could shovel the new snow. I think the littles were more excited about playing in the snow than shoveling.
What are you doing to ward off those back to school winter blues?
