My kids love science! When I recently saw an opportunity for a free online robot building class, I knew we had to try it.
I had not heard of Supercharged Science when I signed up for the class. I was thankful to find they provided a clear list of supplies, suggestions on where to purchase the less familiar items, and a worksheet to get my kids ready for class.
The day of the class held technical difficulties, and we were all disappointed we couldn’t participate. I was pretty sure I could teach the science to the kids myself, if I had some direction for the robot assembly. (and when I say “I could teach the science” I really mean my husband) I was thrilled to learn the class was temporarily available to replay.
We viewed the class in the evening so my nerdy science loving husband could join us. The class provided an overview of robotics, and took us through the steps of building our own working robots.
Initially Little Bear needed some extra help figuring out how the wires worked.
There were several “wow” moments as connections were made and motors were charged.
There was some serious concentration in attaching the legs just right for proper balance.
Little Bear was the first to complete and test her “jiggle bot.”
Not only did the kids enjoy building robots, but they have spent a great deal of time playing with them. They have even made alterations to the original design.
The kids were so excited to play with the robots, we didn’t go through the class worksheet right away. My science loving husband felt the class had offered a good overview of the science behind the robots, and the worksheet gave a clear written explanation. Additional experiment ideas were also provided, and we’ll be continuing to build and test.
The hands on experience of building robots was perfect timing, as our astronomy studies are currently covering space rovers. The class provided a much more challenging project than I would have come up with on my own.
Thanks Supercharged Science for the great class!!
